Philippines Champions Permanent ASEAN Geoeconomic Group to Strengthen Regional Coordination
In a significant move to bolster economic resilience, the Philippines, currently chairing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is spearheading efforts to formalize the bloc's geoeconomics task force into a permanent body. This initiative aims to enhance regional coordination in the face of mounting global economic uncertainties and geopolitical challenges.
DTI Calls for Institutionalization at ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat
During the 32nd ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) urged member states to transform the ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force into a formal unit, to be known as the ASEAN Geoeconomic Group. In a statement, DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque emphasized that this proposed group would enable the region to better anticipate and manage economic disruptions while upholding ASEAN's commitment to open markets.
"For ASEAN, resilience is no longer an aspiration. It is our primary shield," Roque declared in her opening remarks. "While we remain global champions of the open market, the current landscape demands that openness be backed by coordination and foresight."
Enhancing Collective Navigation of Global Economic Shifts
Roque highlighted that institutionalizing the task force into a formal group would significantly strengthen the bloc's ability to navigate global economic shifts collectively. She explained that, alongside the High-Level Task Force on Economic Integration, this body would ensure ASEAN is not merely reacting to global changes but proactively steering through them together.
The ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force was originally established to develop coordinated strategies for the region in response to global trade uncertainties, with a focus on enhancing economic resilience through more unified decision-making.
Unity Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Economic Pressures
Meanwhile, Allan Gepty, DTI Undersecretary for International Trade, underscored the critical importance of maintaining unity among ASEAN member states as geopolitical tensions and economic pressures intensify. Gepty pointed to challenges such as rising oil prices linked to Middle East conflicts, which underscore the urgent need for stronger regional cooperation to safeguard ASEAN's economic integration agenda.
This push for a permanent geoeconomic body reflects a strategic response to evolving global dynamics, aiming to fortify ASEAN's position in an increasingly volatile economic environment.
