The Department of Health (DOH) issued a warning on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, regarding the rising heat index experienced across various parts of the country in recent days. In a social media post, the DOH emphasized the importance of monitoring the heat index, noting that higher temperatures increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Health Risks from Extreme Heat
The DOH stated, "It is important to monitor the heat index because, as it increases, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses." The department highlighted that the threat of heat cramps and heat exhaustion escalates with rising temperatures. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to heat stroke, a severe condition requiring immediate medical attention.
The agency urged the public to adopt precautionary measures to protect their health. "Don't let the heat take its toll on your health," the DOH advised.
PhilHealth Coverage for Heat-Related Conditions
The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) assured the public that benefit packages are available for those who develop heat-related illnesses. In a statement, PhilHealth said it is prepared to assist its members suffering from such conditions.
"We are reminding members of our in-patient benefit packages for common summer- and heat-related illnesses that can be availed in any PhilHealth-accredited hospitals nationwide, thus helping reduce out-of-pocket expenses," PhilHealth stated. The agency affirmed its commitment to protecting every Filipino, ensuring that coverage is accessible to safeguard their well-being.
Specific benefit packages include P12,675 for heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat collapse, heat cramps, and sunstroke. Additionally, packages for heat fatigue and other effects of heat and light amount to P18,135, while moderate to severe dehydration is covered at P7,800.
