Health authorities in Bacolod City are sounding the alarm as leptospirosis cases have skyrocketed by 200 percent in the early months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. According to the City Health Office (CHO), from January to April 4, 2026, the city recorded 12 cases of leptospirosis, resulting in three tragic fatalities. This marks a significant jump from the four cases and one death reported during the same timeframe in 2025.
Barangay-Specific Data Highlights Outbreak Hotspots
Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO’s Environment Sanitation Division, provided a detailed breakdown of the affected areas. Out of Bacolod's 61 barangays, Barangay Estefania leads with two confirmed cases. Following closely are ten other barangays, each reporting one case:
- Barangays 10, 16, 33, and 39
- Banago
- Mandalagan
- Sum-ag
- Taculing
- Singcang-Airport
- Felisa
This distribution underscores the widespread nature of the outbreak, affecting multiple communities across the city.
Critical Health Behaviors and Immediate Actions
Dr. Tan emphasized that delayed health-seeking behavior and denial of exposure to leptospirosis are primary factors contributing to complications and deaths. She urgently advised Bacolodnons who have waded or come into contact with potentially contaminated water or soil—often tainted by rat or animal urine containing leptospira bacteria—to seek immediate prophylaxis at their nearest health center or private doctor.
Key preventive measures include:
- Proper segregation and management of garbage to reduce rat habitats.
- Avoiding contact with floodwater (“tubig baha”) or any damp, dirty ground that may harbor leptospira organisms.
Community Involvement in Rat Control
The CHO is also calling for public cooperation in preventing and controlling the rat population. Residents are encouraged to report uncovered manholes, ditches, open canals, or septic vaults to their respective barangays. These sites can serve as breeding grounds for rats, exacerbating the risk of leptospirosis transmission. Prompt reporting allows for appropriate management and mitigation efforts to curb the outbreak.
This surge in cases highlights the critical need for heightened awareness and proactive community health measures in Bacolod City to combat this preventable yet deadly disease.
