Preparations are now intensifying as Iloilo City's hosting of crucial meetings linked to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit 2026 approaches rapidly. Representatives from member countries are scheduled to arrive between February 24 and 27, 2026, marking a significant international event for the region.
Mayor Treñas Emphasizes Honor and Readiness
Mayor Raisa Treñas expressed profound pride in Iloilo City's selection as a host, stating it is a great honor among all cities considered. During a press conference on Thursday, February 19, 2026, she assured that the city government is committed to providing excellent care and attention to all visitors, ensuring their stay is comfortable and well-managed.
Inter-Agency Coordination and Support
To guarantee seamless execution, the Iloilo City Government held an inter-agency coordination meeting on February 16 with national government partners. The city is offering full support to the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, which lead the organizing efforts for these high-profile gatherings.
Showcasing Cultural and Tourism Assets
As part of the hosting preparations, Iloilo City plans to highlight its unique cultural and tourism offerings. This includes promoting heritage houses, its recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, and its achievement as an ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award recipient. Activities and tours will feature local cuisine, heritage venues, and specially curated dining experiences outside the formal meeting schedules.
Economic and Trade Focus
According to Mayor Treñas, three major ASEAN-related meetings are set to take place in the city through May, primarily concentrating on economic and trade cooperation. The City Government anticipates that this hosting opportunity will significantly enhance global visibility for local industries, potentially leading to job creation and increased economic activity within the community.
Promoting Local Industries Internationally
In recent efforts, Iloilo City, through the Metro Iloilo Guimaras Economic Development Council, has actively participated in major trade expos in Manila, such as the World Food Expo, Manila FAME, and World Bazaar Festival. These initiatives aim to further promote Ilonggo products and enterprises on an international stage, building on previous exposure in trade fairs.
Security and Logistics Coordination
Meanwhile, security preparations are underway in close coordination with police authorities. This involves finalizing protocols and augmenting personnel to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of all meetings. While the city manages logistics on the ground, final details remain under the purview of concerned national agencies, ensuring a comprehensive approach to hosting.
