In a significant maritime operation, authorities in Zamboanga City successfully rescued 15 individuals believed to be potential victims of human trafficking on the evening of Monday, April 20, 2026. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed the details of the rescue in an official statement released on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
Rescue Operation at Private Wharf
The Coast Guard Station (CGS)-Zamboanga reported that the rescue took place at a private wharf located in the Baliwasan village of Zamboanga City. The potential victims were found aboard a wooden-hulled vessel identified as M/L Lhazeeb, which was docked at the wharf at the time of the intervention.
Details of the Rescued Individuals
While the CGS-Zamboanga did not disclose the names of those rescued, they provided a breakdown of the group. The 15 individuals comprised nine males, one of whom was a minor, and six females. This diverse group highlights the broad vulnerability to human trafficking schemes in the region.
Intended Destination and Aftermath
Investigations revealed that the victims were scheduled to travel to Malaysia via the Municipality of Turtle Islands in Tawi-Tawi, a known route for illicit activities. Following their rescue, the individuals were promptly turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Zamboanga Peninsula office for proper care and disposition.
The DSWD-Zamboanga Peninsula has arranged for the rescued victims to be temporarily housed at their Processing Center for Displaced Persons. This facility will provide shelter and support as authorities work to facilitate their safe return to their respective hometowns, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance during this traumatic period.
Commitment to Combating Human Trafficking
The CGS-Zamboanga emphasized that this rescue operation underscores the unwavering commitment of the Philippine Coast Guard and its partner agencies in the fight against human trafficking. Their efforts are focused on ensuring the safety, security, and protection of vulnerable individuals within the maritime domain, particularly in high-risk areas like Zamboanga City.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by human trafficking in the Philippines and the critical role of vigilant maritime patrols. The successful interception of the M/L Lhazeeb vessel demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between law enforcement and social welfare agencies in preventing such crimes and safeguarding at-risk populations.
