ASEAN Advocates for Ongoing Iran-US Dialogue to Achieve Durable Peace in the Middle East
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has issued a strong appeal to the United States and Iran, urging both nations to maintain their diplomatic negotiations aimed at establishing a long-term peace agreement. This call to action follows the recent implementation of a two-week ceasefire between the two countries, which has been widely viewed as a critical step toward de-escalating tensions in the volatile Middle East region.
ASEAN Praises Diplomatic Efforts and Stresses Key Principles
In its official statement, ASEAN commended the instrumental roles played by Pakistan and other involved parties in facilitating the progress of the ceasefire agreement. The regional bloc underscored the paramount importance of sustained diplomacy, unwavering respect for international law, and an immediate cessation of hostilities across the Middle East. ASEAN emphasized that these elements are fundamental to building a stable and peaceful future for the area.
Furthermore, ASEAN highlighted the critical need for ensuring security and guaranteeing the freedom of navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway is a crucial conduit for global oil shipments, and its stability is essential for international trade and energy security.
Strengthening Regional Coordination and Cooperation
According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, ASEAN is actively examining the development of a comprehensive crisis communication protocol. This initiative is designed to enhance and expedite coordination among member states during emergencies or periods of heightened tension. Additionally, ASEAN is reinforcing its collaborative efforts in key sectors such as energy security and food security, aiming to bolster regional resilience and self-sufficiency.
US President Affirms Ceasefire as a Step Toward Lasting Agreement
Concurrently, US President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged that the current ceasefire is an integral component of broader efforts to advance a comprehensive and enduring peace settlement. His remarks align with ASEAN's vision for a diplomatic resolution that addresses the root causes of conflict and fosters sustainable stability in the Middle East.
The collective stance of ASEAN reflects a proactive approach to international diplomacy, advocating for dialogue over confrontation and seeking to contribute to global peace through regional solidarity and principled engagement.
