The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that suspected cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo have exceeded 900. This comes amid intensified surveillance efforts in the country.
Confirmed Cases and Deaths
According to the WHO chief, out of over 900 suspected cases, 101 have been confirmed. A report over the weekend confirmed that the DR Congo health ministry has recorded 204 deaths from the viral disease across three provinces in the central African nation.
Outbreak Declaration
On May 15, the WHO declared an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain in Congo. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or treatment for this strain.
Ebola is a deadly disease transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids and can cause severe bleeding and organ failure.
