DMW Ready to Repatriate 251 OFWs in Thailand Amid Cambodia Border Clash
DMW on Standby for OFW Repatriation from Thailand, Cambodia

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has announced its readiness to assist and potentially bring home Filipinos working in Thailand and Cambodia. This move comes as a response to the ongoing armed border conflict between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Government on High Alert, Monitoring Situation

In a television interview on Monday, December 15, 2025, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured the public of the government's preparedness. He emphasized that while they are on standby, no immediate need for mass repatriation has been identified.

"We are always ready to monitor the situation and for repatriation efforts," Secretary Cacdac stated. He added, "But, we do not see that there will be a repatriation. As long as the situation calms down, they can return to work."

All Affected OFWs in Thailand Reported Safe

The armed clashes, stemming from a long-standing border dispute, have already triggered a significant civilian exodus in the affected areas. Despite the tensions, the DMW chief provided reassuring news regarding Filipino workers' safety.

No injuries or fatalities among Overseas Filipino Workers have been reported so far. "We continuously monitor the situation. Wala naman reported injuries or fatalities so far, and we hope it stays that way," Cacdac confirmed.

He disclosed that approximately 251 OFWs in Thailand have been impacted by the skirmishes. "All are safe and sound and are either in evacuation centers or residences of other Pinoys," he detailed.

Fewer OFWs in Cambodia, Assessment Ongoing

The situation for Filipinos in Cambodia is still being assessed. Secretary Cacdac noted that the number of OFWs in Cambodia is lower than in Thailand. The department is currently verifying their status and location.

"We are hoping na hindi apektado ang mga Pinoy dun sa Cambodia (that Filipinos in Cambodia are not affected)," he expressed. The DMW maintains close coordination with its overseas posts and local authorities in both countries to ensure the welfare of all Filipino nationals.

The department's contingency plans are in place, focusing on the safety of workers while hoping for a swift de-escalation of the border conflict that would allow them to resume their livelihoods securely.
