Government Officials Extend Support to Grieving OFW Family
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) conducted a personal visit on Saturday night, November 29, 2025, to comfort the family of the overseas Filipino worker who tragically lost her life in the devastating Hong Kong fire.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and OWWA Administrator PY Caunan personally assured the bereaved family of comprehensive government assistance and support during their emotional meeting.
Heroic Sacrifice Remembered
In a moving tribute, Secretary Cacdac revealed that the deceased OFW demonstrated extraordinary bravery during the emergency. "May the soul of our dearly departed OFW, a heroine who died while taking care of her employer's five-year-old daughter, rest in God's eternal embrace," Cacdac stated emotionally.
The tragic incident occurred in Tai Po, Hong Kong, when a massive blaze erupted on Wednesday, marking one of the territory's deadliest fires in decades.
Comprehensive Assistance Guaranteed
"The Department of Migrant Workers continues to stand in solidarity with the grieving family and is ready to provide full assistance and support," Cacdac emphasized during the visit.
He further committed that "We shall ensure that the family is given full assistance and care from the government", underscoring the administration's dedication to supporting affected overseas workers and their families.
According to the latest update from the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, the current status of Filipino nationals affected by the fire includes:
- 79 individuals confirmed safe and accounted for
- 1 injured Filipino national
- 12 individuals still undergoing verification processes
The DMW continues to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with Hong Kong authorities to ensure the welfare of all affected overseas Filipino workers.
