Over 100 Overseas Filipino Workers Safely Return Home Amid Regional Unrest

In a significant repatriation effort, a total of 123 Filipinos from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel have been safely returned to the Philippines, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). This operation, conducted on April 18, comes as tensions escalate in the Middle East, prompting government action to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad.

Voluntary Repatriation from the United Arab Emirates

The DMW reported that 101 individuals arrived from the UAE under a voluntary repatriation program initiated by the government. This group comprised 80 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and 21 of their dependents, highlighting the program's focus on family unity during crises. Upon arrival, they were welcomed by representatives from multiple agencies, including the DMW, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Immediate support was provided to the returnees, with the Department of Health (DOH) offering psychosocial services to address potential trauma from the unstable situation. Additionally, seminars on business and livelihood opportunities were conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), aiming to facilitate a smooth transition back into Philippine society.

Comprehensive Reintegration Assistance

To further aid in their adjustment, the repatriated OFWs underwent profiling, skills assessment, and job matching processes. These steps are designed to help them secure new employment opportunities, ensuring they can rebuild their lives with stability and dignity. The government has emphasized its commitment to supporting these individuals through training programs, livelihood assistance, medical support, and employment initiatives.

Return from Israel via Commercial Flight

In a separate operation, 22 OFWs from Israel were also successfully repatriated to the Philippines using a commercial flight. This group included 18 caregivers and 4 hotel workers, who traveled through Egypt before boarding their flight home. The Philippine Embassy in Israel and OWWA played crucial roles in facilitating their journey, coordinating their passage through the Taba Border Crossing on April 16.

The safe return of these workers underscores the government's proactive measures in safeguarding Filipinos abroad during periods of international conflict. As Middle East tensions continue to evolve, such repatriation efforts remain a priority, with ongoing monitoring and assistance for those affected.
