The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has successfully repatriated the 38 Filipino crew members of the MV Hondius following their quarantine in the Netherlands. The repatriation occurred on Friday evening, June 19, 2026, after the seafarers completed their quarantine period due to a hantavirus outbreak aboard the vessel.
DMW Secretary Confirms Arrival
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac announced the safe return of the Filipino seafarers in a social media post. He stated, "Our 38 MV Hondius Filipino seafarers arrived home safely last night from quarantine in the Netherlands."
Continued Employment and Wages
Cacdac emphasized that the seafarers will continue to receive wages for the unexpired portions of their contracts and will remain employed by the shipowner. This ensures their financial stability despite the health incident.
Background of the Outbreak
The 38 Filipino crew members were aboard the MV Hondius when a hantavirus outbreak was declared. Hantavirus is a serious disease that can be transmitted through contact with rodents or their droppings. The crew was placed under quarantine in the Netherlands until June 18 before being allowed to return home.
The timely repatriation highlights the DMW's commitment to the welfare of overseas Filipino workers, ensuring their safety and well-being in challenging situations.
