DMW Issues Urgent Warning to OFWs Amid Middle East Repatriation Drive
In the midst of extensive repatriation operations led by the National Government in the Middle East, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has issued a critical alert to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). The agency is cautioning them to be vigilant against unscrupulous individuals who are exploiting the situation for fraudulent purposes.
Scammers Posing as Government Agents
Through a social media announcement, the DMW highlighted a concerning trend where scammers are impersonating agents involved in government repatriation efforts. "Fellow countrymen, let's be extra careful against scammers, who pretend to help with the government's repatriation efforts," the DMW stated. The agency reinforced this message by adding, "If it's too good to be true, it's probably a scam."
These fraudulent actors are employing a specific modus operandi: they offer "priority" or "assured" flights back to the Philippines in exchange for fees, while falsely claiming connections to embassies or government bodies. As part of their scheme, they often request personal information and demand large processing fees from unsuspecting OFWs.
Legitimate Repatriation Processes Explained
The DMW clarified that legitimate repatriation for OFWs is handled exclusively by the National Government through authorized agencies such as the DMW or the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. Importantly, these official processes never require any payment from the workers or their families. The agency stressed that all repatriation services are provided free of charge as part of government support.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, the DMW advised OFWs to rely solely on official communication channels. This includes using verified social media pages, hotlines, and other government-sanctioned platforms, rather than responding to random messages on platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, or text messages.
Repatriation Efforts and Statistics
The repatriation initiative began on March 5, with the DMW actively bringing home OFWs and their dependents from various countries across the Middle East. Since the start of this operation, the agency has successfully and safely repatriated 3,248 OFWs and their dependents from the Gulf region. This effort underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the welfare and safe return of Filipino workers abroad.
The DMW's warning serves as a timely reminder for OFWs to remain cautious and informed, protecting themselves from potential exploitation during these critical repatriation activities.
