Israeli President Herzog Extends Condolences and Support to Family of Slain Filipino Caregiver
In a heartfelt gesture, Israeli President Isaac Herzog personally met with Bernie Lavarias, the husband of Mary Ann de Vera, a Filipino caregiver who tragically lost her life in an Iranian missile strike. The meeting took place at the Beit HaNassi, the President's House in Jerusalem, on Thursday, where Herzog conveyed his deepest sympathies and assured Lavarias of financial assistance through Israel's compensation program for war victims.
Personal Condolences and Financial Aid
President Herzog expressed his sorrow on behalf of the State of Israel, stating, "On behalf of the State of Israel, I send my deepest condolences to Mary Ann’s family and the entire nation of the Philippines." He emphasized that Lavarias would receive a monthly stipend and other benefits under the national insurance system, designed to support families affected by conflict-related incidents.
During the meeting, Herzog shared a personal connection, noting that his own family once had a Filipino caregiver. He highlighted the integral role Filipino caregivers play in Israeli society, often being regarded as part of the family by many Israelis. Herzog also expressed gratitude for the compassion, dedication, and contributions of the Filipino community, particularly during times of war and crisis.
Philippine Embassy's Response and Safety Concerns
Philippine Ambassador to Israel Aileen Mendiola, who accompanied Lavarias, thanked President Herzog for the support extended to the bereaved family. She conveyed the collective grief of the Filipino community over the loss of De Vera and five other Filipinos who perished during the conflict with Iran last year and the October 7 attacks.
Ambassador Mendiola underscored critical safety measures, stressing the importance of ensuring that workplaces for Filipino workers are equipped with accessible shelters to protect them during emergencies. She expressed hope for peace to prevail, aiming to prevent further loss of innocent lives in the region.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Mary Ann de Vera was accompanying her elderly ward to a shelter in Tel Aviv when she was struck by shrapnel from a retaliatory Iranian missile strike. This attack occurred after the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation on Tehran on February 28. The embassy confirmed that Lavarias accompanied his wife's remains on a flight to Manila, which departed Thursday night, allowing for her final journey home.
This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by overseas Filipino workers in conflict zones and the need for enhanced safety protocols. The meeting between President Herzog and Lavarias serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the solidarity between nations in times of tragedy.
