The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has assured the swift implementation of a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to provide free calls, text messages, and data services for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Middle Eastern nations affected by regional tensions, as well as for their families back in the Philippines. This initiative, known as the "Libreng Tawag Program," aims to offer crucial communication support without any additional costs.
Program Coverage and Immediate Actions
The program specifically targets OFWs residing in Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. These countries have been identified due to ongoing geopolitical challenges that may impact Filipino workers. By enabling free communication, the government seeks to alleviate concerns and maintain vital connections between OFWs and their loved ones during uncertain times.
Telecommunication Companies' Response
NTC Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez praised the rapid response of major telecommunication companies, including Globe Telecom, PLDT/Smart, and DITO Telecommunity. These providers have already activated free call services in alignment with the presidential directive, demonstrating a collaborative effort to support the welfare of OFWs. Commissioner Lopez emphasized that this proactive approach highlights the industry's commitment to social responsibility and national solidarity.
Additional Support Measures
To further enhance accessibility, the NTC has encouraged telecommunication companies to establish free call stations at select mall-based business centers across the Philippines. This measure is designed to assist families of OFWs who may lack personal communication devices or reliable internet access, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the program. The commission will continuously monitor the implementation to guarantee that the intended assistance reaches all eligible individuals effectively.
Ongoing Monitoring and Future Steps
The NTC has committed to ongoing oversight of the Libreng Tawag Program to ensure its success and sustainability. Regular assessments will be conducted to address any operational challenges and optimize service delivery. This initiative reflects a broader governmental effort to safeguard the well-being of OFWs, who play a vital role in the Philippine economy and global diaspora. By providing free communication, the program not only offers practical support but also reinforces the nation's dedication to its overseas workers amidst international uncertainties.
