Philippines Speeds Up OFW Repatriation, Adds Flights for 2,500

The Philippine government has significantly ramped up its repatriation operations for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from the Middle East, with plans to deploy extra flights to bring home approximately 2,500 "repatriation-ready" individuals in the near future. This announcement was made by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Monday, highlighting a concerted effort to assist citizens amid regional challenges.

Latest Arrivals and Cumulative Totals

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac personally welcomed the arrival of 342 OFWs and their dependents aboard a government-chartered flight, marking the ninth such operation. In a recent interview, Cacdac emphasized that this latest group brings the total number of repatriated individuals to over 5,400, a figure that continues to grow as efforts persist.

Upcoming Repatriations from Key Countries

Secretary Cacdac detailed that forthcoming arrivals will include 150 workers from Bahrain and more than 300 from Kuwait, where previous airspace restrictions had temporarily slowed operations. He noted that the reopening of Kuwait Airport is facilitating these plans, enabling a full plane load from the country.

Handling of Deceased OFWs

In a somber update, Cacdac revealed that the remains of 16 OFWs who passed away due to natural causes will also be included in a flight scheduled for Tuesday. He explained that logistical challenges during the temporary airspace closure had delayed the transportation of these bodies, but the DMW is now prioritizing their return alongside living workers.

Government Commitment Amid Challenges

Despite ongoing hurdles, the DMW has assured the public that it remains steadfast in its mission to repatriate distressed workers and deceased Filipinos. Cacdac underscored that the government is prepared to expand these efforts through commercial flights once the situation in the Middle East stabilizes further.

Financial and On-Ground Support

To aid affected workers, the government has pledged comprehensive financial assistance, including on-site support and resources upon their arrival back in the Philippines. This initiative aims to ease the transition and provide necessary relief during a difficult period.
