The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has aligned itself with the assessment of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) that the two suspects in the deadly Bondi Beach shooting in December 2025 did not undergo terrorist training in the Philippines.
Official Assessment and Philippine Cooperation
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the DFA relayed the findings shared by the AFP Commissioner with the Philippine National Police (PNP). The assessment concluded that there is no evidence showing the alleged offenders received training or conducted logistical preparations for their attack while they were in the Philippines from November 1 to 29, 2025.
The DFA further quoted the Australian Federal Police Commissioner, Krissy Barrett, stating the initial probe also found no indication the suspects were part of a larger terrorist cell or were directed by others to carry out the assault. The department emphasized that this assessment is still subject to a continuing investigation.
Swift Philippine Action Praised
Australian authorities officially recognized the rapid and effective assistance provided by Philippine law enforcement during the investigation. Commissioner Barrett noted that without the immediate action taken by Philippine authorities, crucial CCTV footage currently being examined by investigators might not have been obtained.
This collaboration proved vital in piecing together the timeline and movements of the suspects prior to the attack.
Reaffirming Commitment Against Terrorism
As the joint investigation into the Bondi incident continues, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro reiterated the Philippines' strong commitment to combating terrorism and preventing violent extremism. She highlighted the nation's dedication to strengthening intelligence and law enforcement cooperation with Australia and other international partners.
"The Philippines and Australia will continue to jointly address transnational security threats, including terrorism, through sustained information sharing, operational coordination, and capacity-building initiatives," Secretary Lazaro stated.
The Bondi Beach Attack
The tragic event that sparked this international probe occurred on December 14, 2025. Two armed men, a father and son, opened fire from a tall footbridge overlooking Sydney's Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration. The shooting resulted in the deaths of nearly 16 individuals, including one of the gunmen.
The incident underscored the global nature of security threats and the critical importance of cross-border police and intelligence cooperation to prevent such tragedies.
