PNP, AFP Confirm ASEAN 2026 Security Ready, No Threats Detected
PH Security Forces Ready for ASEAN 2026, No Threats

The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, that comprehensive security plans for the country's hosting of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-related activities this year are fully operational. Authorities stated they are not currently monitoring any credible threats to the events.

Year-Long Security Coordination in Place

PNP acting chief, Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., revealed that police preparations have been underway for more than a year. He emphasized extensive coordination with the AFP, various local government units (LGUs), and other law enforcement agencies to guarantee peace and order throughout the ASEAN meetings and summits.

"In coordination with other law enforcement agencies, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and of course, with the help of our local government units, we are ready now to implement or proceed with our security operations for ASEAN," Nartatez declared during a press briefing at Malacañang Palace.

He provided a reassuring update on the threat level, stating, "We have not monitored or gathered any threats with regard to the conduct of ASEAN."

Military Support and VIP Protocols Activated

AFP Deputy Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Rommel Roldan, outlined the military's role, explaining that the AFP will provide crucial support to the PNP in implementing security measures. This support will be focused on key venues where the ASEAN events and high-level summits are scheduled to take place.

To ensure the smooth and secure transit of international delegates and visiting heads of state, Nartatez confirmed that VIP lanes will be enforced. This system mirrors the arrangements successfully used during previous ASEAN summits hosted by the Philippines, most notably in 2017.

"Definitely, we will implement that. That is to improve the security operations implemented last time," he affirmed.

Philippines as a Proven ASEAN Host

As a founding member of ASEAN, the Philippines has a strong track record of hosting major regional summits and ministerial meetings. The country is set to welcome regional leaders, senior officials, and numerous delegates throughout the year for various ASEAN-related activities.

This influx of high-profile visitors has prompted security forces to enact heightened but carefully calibrated security preparations, building on the experience and protocols established from past hostings. The coordinated efforts between the PNP, AFP, and LGUs aim to showcase the Philippines' capability to secure major international gatherings while maintaining normalcy for its citizens.
