PNP Chief Nartatez Orders Heightened Monitoring Against Terrorism Recruitment in Mindanao
PNP Chief Orders Monitoring vs Terrorism Recruitment in Mindanao

MANILA. Acting Philippine National Police chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has issued directives for rigorous surveillance and enhanced intelligence operations to counter potential terrorism recruitment and training activities in the Mindanao region. This move aims to proactively address security concerns and maintain the hard-won peace in areas previously affected by conflict.

Coordinated Security Efforts Amidst Ongoing Threats

In an official statement, Nartatez emphasized that while there is no immediate resurgence of extremism, the PNP remains vigilant through constant coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the national intelligence community. "We treat all the information we receive seriously," he stated, highlighting the collaborative approach to preempt any security breaches.

The acting police chief noted that significant progress has been made in fostering peace, order, and development in Mindanao's former conflict zones. However, he stressed that continuous ground monitoring, supported by AFP counterparts, is essential to sustain these gains and prevent any backsliding into violence.

Response to Recent Ambush and Recruitment Reports

Nartatez's orders come in response to alarming reports from peace advocacy groups monitoring violence in Mindanao. These reports allege that Dawlah Islamiyah has been actively recruiting and training members in Lanao and Maguindanao provinces. This development follows the January 23 ambush in Munai, Lanao del Norte, which resulted in the deaths of four soldiers.

Suspected members of the Dawlah Islamiyah–Maute Group are believed to have carried out the attack while government forces were engaged in non-combat security operations supporting community development initiatives. This incident underscores the persistent challenges in ensuring safety amidst ongoing peace-building efforts.

Uncompromising Stance on Internal Security

In alignment with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, Nartatez affirmed that military and police personnel in Lanao and Maguindanao are maintaining high alert levels. The goal is to uphold an uncompromising stance against internal security threats and ensure the continuous stability of the Bangsamoro region.

Strict monitoring and intervention measures have been integrated into standard protocols to safeguard the national government's achievements in promoting peace and development across Mindanao. Nartatez, drawing from his prior experience as head of the Area Police Command-Western Mindanao, emphasized that these efforts are critical to preventing any resurgence of terrorist activities.

Community Involvement as a Key Strategy

Beyond military and police actions, Nartatez highlighted the vital role of community engagement in peace and order initiatives. He advocated for inclusive measures that involve local residents in efforts to deter terrorism, recognizing that grassroots participation can enhance early warning systems and foster a collective commitment to security.

This comprehensive approach, combining intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination, and community support, reflects the PNP's dedication to addressing complex security dynamics in Mindanao while advancing long-term peace and prosperity for all Filipinos.
