PNP Intensifies Security Measures in Bangsamoro Following Lethal Confrontation with Extremist Faction

The Philippine National Police has escalated the alert status throughout the Bangsamoro region in response to a violent engagement with members of the Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute Group in Lanao del Sur, which culminated in the deaths of ten alleged terrorists.

Heightened Alert Implemented to Counter Potential Retaliatory Strikes

In an official statement released on Sunday, April 19, 2026, PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. declared that all police units within the province and adjacent areas have been placed on heightened alert. This strategic move aims to preempt possible revenge attacks from the extremist organization.

The directive follows a fierce gun battle that erupted during a targeted police manhunt operation. The operation focused on two senior DI-MG figures known only by their aliases, “Usman” and “Muslih,” who are believed to be the group's leader and sub-leader, respectively.

Authorities reported that the suspects initiated gunfire as security forces approached their hideouts, sparking an extended exchange. Both individuals were among the ten fatalities confirmed by police after the confrontation.

Significant Cache of Weapons and Explosives Confiscated

The PNP disclosed that the operation also resulted in the confiscation of a substantial arsenal of firearms and explosive materials. Seized items included M16 and M4 rifles, an M1 Garand rifle, a .38 caliber revolver, a hand grenade, and various components utilized for constructing improvised explosive devices.

Nartatez emphasized that local police units are maintaining collaborative efforts with military forces to pursue remaining group members and avert additional violence. He stated, “All our units in Lanao del Sur and nearby areas are on alert and are in constant coordination with our military counterparts in the conduct of operations to crush the remaining threat and eventually bring peace and development to the local communities.”

Public Assurance and Call for Vigilance Amid Security Concerns

Despite acknowledging the potential for retaliation, the PNP chief reassured citizens that authorities retain full control over the security landscape in the province. He characterized the heightened alert as a precautionary step designed to safeguard civilians and preserve stability.

Residents were strongly encouraged to stay watchful and promptly report any dubious activities to local law enforcement. Nartatez added, “The PNP will remain relentless in ensuring peace and order in every community. I call on the public to remain calm but vigilant.”

The DI-Maute Group, associated with previous extremist actions in Mindanao, remains a primary target of sustained security initiatives as officials work to dismantle its residual network.
