German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has criticized the United States over the ongoing tensions with Iran, stating that Washington is being humiliated amid the escalating crisis in the Middle East. Speaking to students in Marsberg, Merz said, "An entire nation, the U.S., is being humiliated by Iran's leadership."
Merz Questions US Strategy
Merz argued that the U.S. lacks a clear strategy in the current situation and appears to have no direction in negotiations with Iran. "Iran is much stronger than expected, and the U.S. lacks a persuasive strategy in negotiations," he added. The Chancellor emphasized that any war requires a clear plan, not only for its initiation but also for its conclusion.
Comparison to Past Wars
Merz compared the current situation to previous American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, noting that they were not only costly but also led to prolonged conflicts in the Middle East. He pointed out that the crisis has significant economic repercussions for Germany and Europe, particularly in terms of energy and government spending.
Direct Communication with Trump
According to Merz, he directly expressed his concerns to U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that he would have issued a stronger warning had he known the situation would worsen. Meanwhile, Merz announced that Germany is prepared to send mine-clearing vessels to help open the Strait of Hormuz, but only after the fighting subsides.
