U.S.-Israel Strike Near Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Plant Escalates Nuclear Disaster Threat
In a grave development, the threat of a nuclear catastrophe has intensified following a U.S. and Israeli attack near the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran. This alarming situation was highlighted in a serious warning issued on Saturday by the head of Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear corporation. Iran confirmed that a projectile landed close to its sole operational nuclear power plant on Saturday, resulting in the death of a security worker. This marks the fourth such attack on the site since the onset of the ongoing conflict.
Rosatom Issues Dire Warning and Evacuates Personnel
Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev stated that it remains unclear whether the strike was accidental or deliberate. However, he cautioned that the situation at the plant is rapidly approaching a worst-case scenario. In response, Rosatom has initiated the evacuation of its personnel from the facility. Employees are being transported by bus to the Iran-Armenia border to facilitate their return to Russia via Armenia.
International Condemnation and Calls for Immediate Ceasefire
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the Saturday attack, emphasizing that conditions at Bushehr are increasingly approaching a dangerous point. She urged that the worst can still be averted, but only if strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, including the Bushehr plant, cease immediately. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also called for severe military restraint to mitigate the risk of a nuclear accident. Notably, the agency reported no increase in radiation levels following the attack on Saturday.
The escalating tensions underscore the urgent need for diplomatic intervention to prevent a potential nuclear disaster, as global concerns mount over the safety and security of critical infrastructure in conflict zones.
