Police in Central Visayas have apprehended a businessman and his associate after they allegedly tried to bribe officers with a massive cash offer, a luxury vehicle, and high-end gadgets to secure the release of a multi-million peso shipment of smuggled cigarettes.

Entrapment Operation Nets Suspects

The arrest unfolded on Sunday, January 11, 2026, in Santander, Cebu. According to Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, operatives from the Regional Special Project Unit 7 conducted an entrapment operation at around 5:30 p.m. This led to the capture of a 41-year-old businessman and his associate as they were reportedly handing over the bribe money to authorities.

Seizure of P20M Contraband Preceded Bribe Attempt

The bribery attempt was a direct response to a major seizure the night before. On Saturday, January 10, police intercepted a closed van at a checkpoint in Santander town. Inside, they found 200 cases of "Oris" brand cigarettes, with an estimated total value of P20 million.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) later confirmed that the "Oris" brand is not registered for legal sale in the Philippines, classifying the shipment as illicit contraband. The driver and helper of the van were also taken into custody and are facing separate charges.

High-Stakes Bribe Included Cash and Luxury Items

The suspects allegedly offered a staggering package to police in an attempt to secure the shipment's release. The attempted bribe included:

  • One million Philippine pesos (P1,000,000) in cash
  • A Toyota Fortuner SUV
  • Three high-end iPhone smartphones

Brig. Gen. Maranan hailed the operation as a demonstration of PRO7's integrity. "The successful interception of this illicit cigarette shipment and the arrest of individuals attempting to bribe our personnel demonstrate PRO7’s unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law, protect public resources, and maintain integrity within our ranks," Maranan stated.

Multiple Charges Filed Against Duo

The arrested suspects now face a slate of serious criminal charges. These include violations of:

  • Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code (Corruption of public officials)
  • Republic Act 3019, the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act
  • Presidential Decree 46, which makes it a punishable offense for public officials to receive gifts

The case underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Central Visayas to combat smuggling and corruption, sending a clear message that attempts to undermine the legal process will be met with decisive action.
