Major Cigarette Smuggling Bust in Zamboanga Waters

Philippine law enforcement scored a significant victory against illegal trade with the interception of smuggled cigarettes valued at an estimated P21 million. The operation, which led to the arrest of five individuals, was conducted by maritime police units off the coast of Zamboanga City.

Maritime Patrol Leads to Interception

According to a report released on Thursday, November 13, 2025, the successful operation was carried out the previous day, Wednesday, November 12. Police Lieutenant Colonel Richard Salanguit, commander of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force 'Seaborne' Company, disclosed that his team was on a routine security patrol when they spotted two suspicious motorboats.

The vessels, identified as M/B Zhyryne and M/B Sophia Jayy, were maneuvering near Sta. Cruz Island in Sta. Barbara village, Zamboanga City. The M/B Zhyryne was manned by a three-person crew, while the M/B Sophia Jayy had a four-person crew on board.

Massive Contraband Discovered and Arrests Made

Upon inspection, the operatives discovered that both boats were loaded with a large quantity of undocumented cigarettes. The crew members were immediately placed under arrest after they failed to present any legal documents or permits for their cargo, which was destined for the city.

The contraband seized amounted to a total of 300 master cases containing various brands of cigarettes. The combined value of the seized goods was officially pegged at P21 million.

Ongoing Investigation and Case Disposition

Following the interception, the five arrested crewmen, the confiscated smuggled cigarettes, and the two motorboats used in the illegal operation were transported to the headquarters of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force 'Seaborne' Company. Authorities are now handling the case for proper legal disposition and further investigation to uncover the smuggling network behind this attempt.

This operation highlights the continued vigilance of Philippine law enforcement agencies in combating smuggling and protecting the nation's borders from illicit trade.
