Cebu Police Start Proficiency Firing Training

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) officially launched its Proficiency Firing Program on Monday, June 1, 2026, at the firing range of Camp Sotero Cabahug on Gorordo Avenue, Cebu City.

Training for New Recruits

On the third day of the program, nearly 50 new police personnel holding the rank of Patrolman were the first to undergo training in the use of their firearms.

Christopher Panis, a retired police officer who is training the new CCPO recruits, emphasized the importance of subjecting every personnel to firearm handling training. The goal is to ensure they have discipline and knowledge in proper firearm handling for their own safety and that of the public.

Firearm Familiarization

Panis explained that at the training center, they typically use high-caliber weapons for training, unlike the low-caliber firearms currently issued to them in service. Therefore, they need to become familiar with the 9mm caliber, which is the standard government-issued firearm.

He urged all police officers in Cebu City, regardless of their length of service, to continuously practice marksmanship.

Restoring 'Cebu's Finest' Reputation

One of the aspirations of the CCPO leadership is to restore the proficiency of all city police officers to regain their former reputation as "Cebu's Finest."

Police Colonel George Ylanan, the chief of police of Cebu City, announced that the city government has assisted by providing ammunition for the program. This is to ensure that all personnel remain equipped with knowledge and skills in using their firearms for more effective public protection.
