DA orders GenSan Fish Port inspection after 7.8 quake

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has ordered a comprehensive structural assessment of the General Santos Fish Port Complex after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck on June 8, causing partial closures of the facility.

Initial inspection found damage, prompted closure of market halls

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. directed the deeper evaluation following a preliminary inspection on June 8 and 9 that identified conditions leading to the temporary closure of Market Halls 1, 2, and 3, while limiting the use of Market Hall 4. The new assessment aims to obtain a complete picture of the facility's condition, including geotechnical investigation and other tests following aftershocks.

According to a June 18 report by Philippine Fisheries Development Authority Acting General Manager Glen Pangapalan, the initial evaluation indicated that the fish port complex remains structurally sound. No casualties or injuries were recorded among employees, traders, and other stakeholders despite the strong shaking.

Officials stress need for detailed evaluation to ensure safety

Pangapalan emphasized the importance of a more detailed examination to confirm the facility's safety and determine necessary corrective measures. Tiu Laurel highlighted the need to expedite the assessment to ensure the safety of those who rely on the fish port for their livelihoods.

The General Santos Fish Port Complex is one of the country's most important fisheries facilities and serves as the primary hub for the tuna industry in General Santos City, known as the tuna capital of the Philippines.
