From Reluctant Campaigner to Confident Speaker: Baste Duterte's Political Evolution
When former Davao City Mayor Rodrigo "Digong" Duterte emerged as a potential presidential candidate for the 2016 elections, it ignited widespread excitement and hope among Filipinos. At that time, the nation was grappling with severe issues of drugs and corruption, and Duterte's candidacy promised a decisive solution. Supporters immediately mobilized, with various groups launching campaign activities fueled by genuine enthusiasm and financial contributions from the public.
Grassroots Mobilization and Early Campaign Efforts
Campaign activities were vibrant and grassroots-driven. Supporters purchased Digong T-shirts, used Digong ballers, printed tarpaulins, and even repurposed cement sacks for campaign markings. Digong merchandise from Davao sold out rapidly due to high demand. In Bohol, local organizers discussed inviting Duterte's son, Sebastian "Baste" Duterte, to represent his father during campaign events. This led to concerted efforts to bring Baste to Bohol, despite initial challenges.
Initially, Baste was hesitant to engage in politics, but through persistent efforts, he was successfully brought to Tagbilaran. This move faced opposition from Digong's close associate, Toloy, yet it proceeded. At the time, Baste appeared inexperienced and somewhat awkward when holding a microphone and speaking before crowds. However, his presence alone delighted supporters, who were grateful to have a family representative even in Digong's absence.
The RAGE Coalition Launch and Baste's Transformation
Baste's visit to Bohol was successful, with him attending numerous events. Recently, he reappeared at Club Filipino in Greenhills during the launch of the RAGE Coalition. This coalition comprises various groups supporting Inday Sara Duterte, including three key parties: PDP, Reforma Pilipino, and Reform Ph Party. Baste, newly appointed as PDP president, served as the guest of honor and speaker at this event.
During his speech, observers were struck by the dramatic transformation in Baste's demeanor. His tone, language, and even his cursing style closely mirrored his father's. One attendee noted that closing your eyes while he spoke made it feel as if Digong himself was addressing the crowd. Baste spoke with precision, clarity, and confidence, avoiding repetition and relying on his own words rather than reading from a script.
A New Political Voice Emerges
Unlike many politicians who depend on humor, smiles, or lengthy appeals for respect, Baste demonstrated a straightforward and authentic approach. He urged continued faith in the Divine, advocated for clean and peaceful campaigning for his sister Inday Sara, and warned against money-driven campaign activities and frivolous methods. Additionally, he called for prayers for his father, Digong, whom he claimed was kidnapped by BBM and taken to the ICC in The Hague, hoping for his safe return to the family.
This evolution marks Baste Duterte's growing role in Philippine politics, blending his father's legacy with a renewed commitment to ethical governance and public engagement.
