Comelec Vows to Shepherd Lawmakers on 2026 Barangay Elections Decision
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has pledged to offer guidance to legislators as they deliberate on the fate of the November 2026 Barangay and Municipal Council Elections (BSKE). In a statement issued on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the poll body emphasized its commitment to ensuring informed decision-making regarding potential postponement proposals.
Comelec Chairman Outlines Support Role
During a phone interview, Comelec Chairman George Garcia clarified the commission's position, stating that providing factual data is the most effective way to assist policymakers. "We will make available facts and figures. We can just shepherd our policy makers hoping to result in the right decision to ensure that public interest is catered," Garcia explained. He stressed that this approach aims to balance electoral integrity with broader societal needs.
Preparations Continue Unabated
Despite ongoing discussions about delaying the polls, Garcia confirmed that Comelec will proceed with its preparations for the village and youth elections. "We have our timelines, and we intend to strictly follow the same. Otherwise, we will be remiss of our duty," he asserted. The commission has no plans to suspend or slow down its activities, underscoring its readiness to conduct the elections if they proceed as scheduled.
Political Push for Postponement
The debate over the BSKE's future was ignited by Deputy Speaker and Bacolod City Representative Albee Benitez, who advocates for another postponement. Benitez argues that the funds earmarked for the elections could be better utilized to support sectors grappling with the rising costs of fuel and essential commodities. His proposal has sparked significant controversy within political circles.
Civil Society Opposition
In response to the postponement push, prominent election watchdogs have voiced strong opposition. The Legal Network for Truthful Elections (Lente) and the National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) have both expressed concerns, highlighting the importance of maintaining regular electoral schedules to uphold democratic processes and voter engagement.
As the November 2026 deadline approaches, the interplay between legislative action, Comelec's steadfast preparations, and civil society advocacy will shape the outcome of this critical electoral event.
