The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced a temporary suspension of voter registration activities for Filipinos residing in Israel, effective from Wednesday, March 4, 2026, through Saturday, March 7, 2026. This decision comes as a precautionary measure in response to ongoing safety and security concerns in the region.
Safety Concerns Prompt Suspension in Israel
In an official statement, Comelec cited the suspension of all consular services at the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, until March 7, 2026, as the primary reason for halting voter registration. "All consular services of foreign posts in-country, including the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, are suspended for safety and security reasons until March 7, 2026. Hence, voter registration for overseas Filipinos in Israel is being suspended until March 7, 2026," the poll body explained.
Indefinite Halt in Iran
Additionally, Comelec revealed that voter registration for overseas Filipinos in Iran has been suspended indefinitely. This action follows advice from the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, which recommended the suspension until further notice due to the volatile situation in the area.
Continued Operations in Other Middle East Countries
Despite the suspensions in Israel and Iran, Comelec emphasized that voter registration activities will proceed as scheduled in other countries across the Middle East. "Consular services and voter registration in other countries in the Middle East continue to be available for Filipinos," the commission assured.
Call for Vigilance in the Gulf Region
Comelec strongly advised Filipinos living in the Gulf region to remain vigilant and stay informed about potential changes in advisories from their host countries. "The Commission on Elections once again strongly advises our fellow Filipinos in the Middle East to remain vigilant and stay informed about the situation in their respective regions," the statement read.
Background on Overseas Voter Registration
It is important to note that overseas voter registration for the 2028 national elections commenced on December 1, 2025, and is scheduled to run until September 30, 2027. This timeline allows ample opportunity for Filipinos abroad to participate in the democratic process, despite current disruptions in specific regions.
