Cebu Police Start Oplan SUMVAC for Summer Tourist Safety

The Cebu City Police Office has successfully concluded its security operations for the Semana Santa period and has now launched Oplan SUMVAC, or Oplan Summer Vacation, to ensure public safety during the upcoming summer season. This strategic initiative commenced on March 29, 2026, and will continue through May 31, 2026, covering key tourist areas and transportation hubs in the city.

Enhanced Security Measures for Tourist Destinations

According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Franco Rodulf Oriol, the information officer of the Cebu City Police Office, personnel previously deployed to religious sites during Semana Santa have been reassigned to various tourist destinations. This redeployment aims to bolster security in locations frequented by both local and international visitors.

Focus Areas for Police Operations

The police will prioritize security at hotels, resorts, and well-known attractions such as Magellan’s Cross and the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. Additionally, malls, bus terminals, ports, and other crowded areas will receive heightened surveillance to prevent incidents and ensure a safe environment for tourists.

Oriol emphasized that Cebu City serves as a major transit point for passengers traveling to neighboring provinces like Bohol, Leyte, and Negros. As a result, the police will maintain strict security protocols, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming ASEAN Summit in May 2026. This event is expected to draw significant international attention, necessitating robust safety measures across the city.

The implementation of Oplan SUMVAC reflects the police force's proactive approach to managing large-scale events and seasonal tourism peaks. By focusing on preventive measures and visible police presence, authorities aim to deter criminal activities and respond swiftly to any emergencies. This initiative underscores the commitment of the Cebu City Police Office to safeguarding both residents and visitors during the busy summer months.
