Davao City Recreation Center Announces Temporary Closure for Comprehensive Rehabilitation

The City Economic Enterprise (CEE) has officially declared that the Davao City Recreation Center (DCRC), historically known as the Almendras Gym, will undergo a temporary closure to facilitate essential repair and rehabilitation efforts. This move aims to enhance the facility's structural integrity and overall user experience for future events.

Scheduled Closure and Detailed Repair Plans

According to Maximo Macalipes, the officer-in-charge of CEE, the temporary shutdown is scheduled from April 20 to May 2, 2026. During this period, extensive work will be conducted on multiple key areas of the gymnasium. The rehabilitation project includes repairs to the basketball flooring, repainting of side walls, refurbishment of bleachers, upgrades to comfort rooms, replacement of lighting systems, and reinforcement of some structural posts. Macalipes emphasized that although the repairs are categorized as minimal, the closure is necessary to ensure safety and efficiency during the rehabilitation process.

Impact on Activities and Alternative Venue Options

In response to concerns about disrupted activities and potential loss of city income, Macalipes assured that proactive planning has been implemented. All regular users of the gym have been notified in advance, and no activities will be permitted on-site during the repair period. For those requiring a larger venue, the Agdao Function Hall, located above the Agdao Public Market, is available as an alternative. Reservations can be arranged by coordinating directly with the market supervisor, providing a seamless transition for event organizers.

Funding and Long-Term Benefits of the Rehabilitation

Macalipes highlighted that this rehabilitation marks the first major overhaul for the DCRC in a significant period, made possible by a funding allocation of P13,981,516.77 from the General Fund in 2025. He expressed gratitude for this financial support, noting that it will enable comprehensive improvements to address wear and tear from extensive public use. The upgrades are expected to significantly enhance the experience for future sporting events and community gatherings, ensuring the facility remains a premier public resource in Davao City.

Public Appeal and Government Communication

Earlier announcements from the City Government of Davao confirmed the temporary closure for retention and repair works, urging public understanding as efforts are made to improve the structure. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to maintaining and upgrading public infrastructure to better serve the community's needs.
