Despite facing significant challenges from recent typhoons, Mandaue City in Cebu has confirmed that its annual Christmas lighting ceremony will proceed as scheduled on November 28, 2025.
Typhoon Impacts Force Simpler Celebration
Mayor Thadeo Jovito "Jonkie" Ouano acknowledged that preparations for the holiday event experienced delays due to the impact of Typhoons Verbena and Tino. The city administration has decided to scale back festivities while maintaining the Christmas spirit that residents look forward to each year.
"This Christmas lighting will still push through on November 28. It was slightly delayed because we faced calamities, including two typhoons. But our instruction is simple: we will celebrate the spirit of Christmas," Mayor Ouano stated during the announcement.
Cost-Cutting Measures Implemented
The city management has made conscious decisions to reduce expenses for both the lighting ceremony and city-wide Christmas programs compared to previous years. While specific budget figures haven't been finalized, officials confirmed spending will be lower than last year's celebrations.
"If we can cut the cost, I'm sure it will be lower than last year. Mandaue has many priorities right now, but we also cannot ignore Christmas," Ouano explained, highlighting the need for fiscal responsibility while maintaining tradition.
Resilience Defines Cebuano Christmas Spirit
Mayor Ouano emphasized that celebrating Christmas represents an important aspect of the city's character and resilience, particularly after many residents faced difficulties from the recent weather disturbances.
"We will still celebrate Christmas, no matter what. Cebuanos and Filipinos are always resilient. We cannot bypass Christmas, especially now that many of our brothers and sisters need help," the mayor affirmed.
The city has modified several traditional holiday activities to align with the current situation. Instead of hosting a grand Christmas party for all city employees, celebrations will be organized by individual departments with modest arrangements.
Traditional holiday food distributions will continue, with employees receiving Christmas ham, longganisa, and tocino as in previous years. The city has also reduced the budget allocated for Christmas decorations throughout municipal areas.
