Mandaue City Prepares for Spectacular Christmas Lighting
Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Jovito "Jonkie" Ouano has officially confirmed that the city's much-anticipated Christmas Lighting Ceremony will proceed as scheduled on November 28, 2025. The mayor provided this assurance during his announcement on Thursday, November 27, emphasizing that preparations are nearly complete for the holiday event.
Modest Yet Meaningful Celebrations
Mayor Ouano revealed that the city allocated approximately P8 million for this year's Christmas decorations, describing the budget as "modest" but emphasizing that officials "really did our best to make people happy." The lighting display will cover not only the city plaza but also extend along Ouano Avenue and A.C. Cortes, creating a wider festive atmosphere throughout key areas of Mandaue.
In a thoughtful decision reflecting the community's recent challenges, the mayor confirmed that there will be no large concerts or band performances during the 10-day event. Instead, the city will feature a food park available for 10 days, providing families with casual dining options while they enjoy the decorations.
A Symbol of Hope and Resilience
Department of General Services head Engineer Marivic Cabigas reported that the Christmas decorations are 95 percent complete, with only final hanging and clearing work remaining. She explained that this year's theme was specifically designed to reflect the challenges Mandaue City has faced throughout 2025.
"The highlight is bright and sparkling because after everything we have experienced, we want to show that there is still hope," Cabigas stated. She described the current situation as a "wake-up call for everyone not to lose hope" and emphasized that Christmas represents a celebration of faith and renewal for the community.
The centerpiece of the display features a uniquely designed Christmas tree that resembles a ribbon, which Cabigas created to symbolize "a gift for everyone" in Mandaue City. Mayor Ouano echoed this sentiment of hope, expressing his wish that "nothing more will come before the year ends" after the difficulties the city has already endured.
Both officials encouraged residents to visit the plaza, particularly on weekends, with the mayor noting that "this is a good place for families to unwind." For those who may not have time to decorate their own homes, the city's Christmas display offers an alternative destination for family photos and holiday enjoyment.
