Mexico Town Council Proposes Fuel Pump Calibration Ordinance for Consumer Protection
The municipal council of Mexico, a town in Pampanga, is taking decisive steps to bolster consumer protection by focusing on the accuracy of fuel dispensing at local gas stations. Councilor Ariel Benedict Bonus has introduced a proposed ordinance that mandates the regular inspection and calibration of all fuel pumps and nozzles across every gas station operating within the town's jurisdiction.
Ensuring Fair Trade for Motorists
Councilor Bonus emphasized that the primary goal of this measure is to guarantee that motorists receive the precise volume of petroleum products they pay for, addressing concerns over potential discrepancies in fuel dispensing. "While we cannot control or prevent the rising prices of gasoline and diesel, we will ensure that every cent paid by citizens corresponds to the exact product they receive," Bonus stated, highlighting the initiative's focus on fairness in trade practices.
This proposal is part of Bonus's broader advocacy to promote fair trade, which also includes monitoring weighing scales in public markets to protect consumers from shortchanging. The ordinance aims to build trust between consumers and businesses by ensuring transparency in transactions.
Key Provisions of the Proposed Ordinance
Under the proposed ordinance, several critical requirements will be implemented:
- Every fuel pump must undergo calibration every three months to maintain accuracy.
- Gas station owners will be required to pay corresponding fees for each unit inspected, covering the costs of the calibration process.
- Stations that successfully pass the inspection will be issued an official seal as proof of compliance, a move designed to enhance consumer confidence and signal adherence to standards.
Stakeholder Engagement and Alignment with National Guidelines
To ensure the ordinance's effectiveness and acceptance, Councilor Bonus announced that the Sangguniang Bayan will organize a meeting with approximately 40 gas station owners in the town to gather their feedback and address any concerns. This collaborative approach aims to foster cooperation and smooth implementation.
Additionally, consultations will be conducted with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Energy to align the proposed ordinance with existing national guidelines. "In other towns and cities in Pampanga, similar measures are in place, so we are examining how this can benefit our town, especially the people," Bonus added, indicating a learning-from-peers strategy to tailor the initiative to local needs.
