Former Senator Richard Gordon has stood firm on his call for Senator Alan Peter Cayetano to resign as Senate President. Gordon is among those urging Cayetano to step down as Senate leader following a series of disruptions and multiple canceled sessions in the upper chamber.
According to Gordon, he first made this call five days ago. The veteran lawmaker argued that since Cayetano assumed the leadership, the chamber has experienced a string of mishaps and chaos, including protecting fugitive Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, a shooting incident, Dela Rosa's escape, lack of quorum, and a walkout protest. Gordon added that Cayetano seems to have forgotten himself and his principles, as well as the people who voted for him.
Because of these, Gordon said it is only proper for the upper chamber to choose a new leader to ensure the continuity of its work, both as a legislative body and as an impeachment court. Gordon, who previously served as chairman of the powerful Blue Ribbon Committee, stressed that Cayetano's continued stay in the Senate is akin to 'hara-kiri' and severely affects the integrity of the Senate.
