Consumers should once again expect a heavier burden on their electricity bills this June after the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) implemented a rate increase.
According to Meralco's advisory, the household electricity rate will increase by P0.1488 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for the month of June. As a result, the total electricity charge will reach P14.4833 per kWh, up from P14.3345 per kWh in May.
The company said that this adjustment is equivalent to an additional approximately P29.76 on the monthly bills of households consuming 200 kWh.
Meralco explained that the rate hike is mainly due to higher generation charges. This is related to the series of yellow and red alerts recorded in the Luzon grid in May, which affected the cost of electricity purchased from power suppliers.
Meralco advises consumers to be more careful in their electricity usage to help control their monthly expenses.
