The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has temporarily suspended water releases for irrigation to prioritize household and commercial supply in Metro Manila. Executive Director Sevillo David Jr. emphasized the need to prioritize domestic and commercial use amid the continuous decline in Angat Dam's water level.
Angat Dam water level critical
As of today, the water level at Angat Dam was recorded at nearly 166 meters, which is 14 meters below the minimum operating level of 180 meters. This significant drop has forced the NWRB to cut the allocation for irrigation in the provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga, which typically rely on water from the dam.
El Niño and lack of rain blamed
According to data from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the decline is due to insufficient rainfall in the region and the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, which is intensifying the dry spell. The NWRB continues to monitor the situation and is expected to issue further advisories if the water level continues to drop.
Public advised to conserve water
The agency has advised the public to conserve water and be prepared for possible stricter rationing if the dam's condition does not improve in the coming weeks. Angat Dam is the primary water source for Metro Manila, supplying more than 90% of the region's total water needs.
