PNP Sends More Police to Senate Amid Political Tensions

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed additional police officers to the Senate in preparation for possible protests amid rising political tensions.

In a statement, PNP chief Gen. Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the deployment is a "strict precautionary and proactive measure." He added that the PNP will increase police visibility around the Senate and nearby government facilities due to ongoing fears of possible protests and public disturbances caused by political tensions.

Earlier, several groups protested outside the Senate to support the call of minority senators for the resignation of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate President.

In connection with recent events at the Senate, Gen. Nartatez has ordered the National Capital Region Office to further expand police visibility and set up checkpoints around the premises of the chamber.

Additionally, the PNP is coordinating with Senate security personnel, local governments, and traffic management authorities for the security layout. Threat and intelligence assessments are also being conducted to identify possible threats amid the political tensions.

The general appealed to organizers planning rallies to keep their activities peaceful and orderly.
