Tulfo Denies Deal Behind Escudero's Senate Appearance

Senator Erwin Tulfo has denied allegations that former Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s attendance at the Upper Chamber’s session on Wednesday, June 3, came with any conditions or agreements.

Tulfo Refutes Speculations

In a media interview, Tulfo dismissed speculations that Escudero’s presence during the session was tied to any deal amid ongoing issues and tensions within the Senate. He also refuted claims that Malacañang intervened to ensure Escudero’s attendance.

“Why would the Palace interfere? This is the Senate, we are another branch of the government,” Tulfo said.

His statement came amid rumors regarding Senate developments and alleged divisions among lawmakers over leadership issues in the chamber. Escudero attended the session and defended his actions as Senate leader.

Escudero’s Stand

In a separate statement, Escudero emphasized that he does not side with any faction and remains focused on the welfare of the Senate institution.

“This is not a political contest. I am not taking sides. I am taking a stand for the Senate. My allegiance is not to any faction, personality, group or alliance. This is not about loyalty, betrayal, or choosing one group over the other—this is about duty,” Escudero said.

Senate Independence

Despite the issues facing the chamber, Tulfo insisted that the Senate remains independent as a branch of government, and internal matters should be resolved by senators without influence from other branches.

Consultations and discussions regarding Senate operations and leadership are expected to continue.
