At least 21 drivers have been charged in court after being caught violating the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013.
LTO 7 reports arrests
Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 Regional Director Atty. Wendel Dinglasan revealed that 18 of these drivers were apprehended in Cebu City, while the other three were caught in Talisay City.
"These operations were conducted in coordination with the Philippine National Police, and the drivers tested positive for alcohol intake on the spot using our Alcohol Breath Analyzers (ABA) devices," Atty. Dinglasan said.
Convictions and pending cases
He added that the three drivers apprehended in Talisay City have already been convicted and found guilty of violating Republic Act No. 10586.
"The remaining 18 cases are still pending before the Fiscal's Office. We have been very strict with DUI drivers here in Cebu and in Bohol, as we have seen an increasing number of accidents involving them," the director added.
All violators are male, aged 19 to 40 years old. Among those arrested was a Korean national.
Crackdown intensified
The intensified campaign against drunk drivers began when Atty. Dinglasan assumed office at LTO 7, with assistance from local police and enforcers from the LTO Central Office.
Since his appointment as Regional Director, over 200 driver's licenses have been suspended by Atty. Dinglasan across the region due to various traffic violations. Of that number, nearly 40 drivers have been recommended for license revocation.
Dinglasan also revealed that about 80 show-cause orders have been issued against drivers and vehicle owners.
Common violations
Major violations include road rage, reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, and reckless driving, including dangerous stunts posted by content creators and vloggers on social media.
The official also reminded motorists not to perform stunts at the Red Cliff along the Cebu Transcentral Highway.
Atty. Dinglasan called on all license holders to follow road safety rules and to be proactive in being responsible and disciplined on the roads.
