House Trial Spokesperson and Lanao del Sur Representative Zia Alonto Adiong believes that the controversy involving the 18 so-called 'Maleta Boys' is a diversionary tactic aimed at shifting public attention away from the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Questionable Timing
Adiong stated that the timing of the accusation is questionable and that the intention to divert attention is very obvious. The issue stemmed from allegations made by 18 former bodyguards of Zaldy Co. The group claimed they delivered suitcases containing money to several lawmakers, including Adiong, who vehemently denied the accusation.
According to Adiong, the accusers openly identify themselves as supporters of the Vice President. He also criticized the push to present them during the hearing of the Senate Blue Ribbon Subcommittee, which coincides with the Senate's preparation for the trial.
Focus on Impeachment Court Duties
He further argued that issues dragged into the controversy, such as flood control funds, are already being addressed by the appropriate agencies like the Ombudsman, which is already building a case. Therefore, the Senate should focus on its role as an Impeachment Court, as it now has jurisdiction over the Vice President's case.
Adiong expressed confidence that the process will continue smoothly after receiving notice from the Senate leadership for the upcoming pre-trial conference scheduled for June 18.
