House Prosecutor and Manila Representative Joel Chua stated that it is a major decision for the legal team of Vice President Sara Duterte whether to allow her to testify in her impeachment trial, as she would be subjected to cross-examination by the prosecution.
According to Chua, it is a strategic choice for the defense camp if they believe that having the Vice President testify would benefit their case. He explained that if Duterte takes the stand, she will first undergo examination by her own lawyers. After that, the House prosecutors have the right to question the Vice President to scrutinize her statements.
The Senate pre-trial conference is scheduled for June 18, while the formal trial will begin on July 6. Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on May 11, 2026, after 257 lawmakers voted in favor due to allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds.
