Bacolod City Government Launches Free Transportation Initiative During Transport Strike

The Bacolod City Government has taken proactive measures to support commuters impacted by a transport strike on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. In response to the disruption, the city deployed several vehicles for "libre sakay" or free ride services across various barangays, ensuring that residents can continue their daily travels without undue hardship.

Strategic Deployment of Vehicles

Mayor Greg Gasataya ordered the deployment of these free transportation services along identified routes in key areas, including Barangays Bata, Banago, Singcang-Airport, Estefania, Mansilingan, Cabug, and Alijis. According to Gasataya, at least 12 vehicles were mobilized for this initiative, sourced from multiple city departments to maximize coverage and efficiency.

  • Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO)
  • City bus units

The "libre sakay" vehicles began operations at 6:30 a.m., with pick-ups scheduled from 7 a.m. onwards, offering two trips during the morning rush. To accommodate evening commuters, the vehicles were redeployed around 5 p.m., also providing two trips during peak hours. This strategic timing aims to minimize disruptions for workers, students, and other residents relying on public transport.

Call for Peaceful Protest and Continued Services

Mayor Gasataya emphasized the importance of peaceful conduct during the transport strike, urging participants to express their concerns without violence. "We appeal to our fellow citizens who will participate in tomorrow’s transport strike to express their concerns peacefully. Everyone has the right to voice their stand and advocate for issues they believe in," he stated, referencing previous protests as a model for orderly demonstration.

Despite the strike, the City Government assured the public that all essential operations would continue uninterrupted. Efforts are focused on maintaining public order and providing critical services, with the "libre sakay" initiative being a key component of this commitment. The deployment underscores the administration's dedication to addressing community needs during times of civic action.

This move highlights Bacolod's responsive governance, as it leverages city resources to mitigate the impact of transport strikes on daily life. By offering free rides, the government not only supports commuters but also fosters a sense of stability and care within the community.
