Truck operators and business groups are urging the Mandaue City Government to temporarily suspend the truck ban for 60 days, citing rising fuel prices and operational delays that have hampered deliveries and businesses.
Traffic Board Meeting Scheduled
Hyll Retuya, head of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team), stated that the request for a citywide moratorium on the truck ban will be discussed during the Traffic Board meeting on April 28, 2026. He explained that the city government has not yet made a decision on the matter, as ongoing consultations with the Cebu Provincial Capitol and other local government units (LGUs) in Metro Cebu could lead to a unified truck regulation policy across the metropolis.
Reasons Behind the Request
According to Retuya, truckers pushed for the temporary removal of restrictions due to the continuous increase in fuel prices, which affects their delivery schedules and operational costs. They also fear that delayed deliveries could result in client withdrawals, further impacting their businesses.
Potential Traffic Concerns
Despite the request, Retuya noted that lifting the truck ban could potentially create worse traffic congestion, especially in Mandaue City, which serves as a major transportation hub in Metro Cebu.
Currently, Mandaue City enforces a truck ban from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, except on Sundays and holidays. However, Retuya clarified that trucks are allowed to travel at any time on the designated truck corridor from the CIP to Barangay Kansaga without being apprehended.
From January to April this year, Team recorded 96 apprehensions for truck ban violations, most of which involved non-essential vehicles.
