The Cebu City Police Office has apprehended more than 400 traffic violators in a series of operations conducted across the city. The crackdown, aimed at improving road safety and ensuring strict adherence to traffic regulations, resulted in the issuance of citations and penalties for various offenses.
According to police reports, the operations covered major thoroughfares and intersections where violations such as disregarding traffic signals, illegal parking, and driving without proper documentation were common. The police emphasized that the enforcement is part of a broader initiative to reduce road accidents and enhance public safety.
Operation Highlights
During the week-long operation, authorities set up checkpoints and conducted mobile patrols to monitor driver behavior. The most common violations included failure to wear helmets, lack of seat belts, and obstructing traffic flow. Police also noted that many motorists were unaware of recent traffic ordinance updates.
Police Colonel, the city director, stated that the campaign would continue indefinitely, with a focus on education alongside enforcement. “We want to remind everyone that traffic laws are in place for their protection. We will not hesitate to penalize those who endanger themselves and others,” he said.
Public Response
While some residents praised the police for their efforts, others expressed concern over the strict implementation, particularly among public utility drivers who rely on daily earnings. However, the police assured that they are coordinating with transport groups to provide seminars on traffic rules and safe driving practices.
The Cebu City Traffic Office also supported the operation, deploying additional personnel to assist in managing traffic flow and educating violators. Data from the operation will be used to identify high-risk areas and improve traffic management strategies.
