SM Retail Wins NPC Compliance Excellence Award at Data Privacy Conference

SM Retail, the retail arm of the SM Group, has been honored with the NPC Seal of Registration Compliance Excellence Award for the Private Sector at the National Data Privacy Conference held in Parañaque City. The award was presented by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) during the event, which took place as part of Privacy Awareness Week (PAW).

Recognition for Transparency and Accountability

The NPC Seal of Registration Compliance Excellence Award recognizes private sector organizations that demonstrate transparency and accountability by prominently displaying their NPC Seal of Registration across their operations and digital platforms. SM Retail’s compliance with data privacy standards was highlighted as a core component of its corporate governance.

“We are grateful for this recognition from NPC. We understand how critical data governance is in maintaining customer trust and loyalty. This award reflects the collective effort of the different business units across SM Retail to strengthen data privacy compliance and awareness,” said Jonathan Ng, President of SM Retail.

Additional Honors and Initiatives

SM Retail was also named a finalist for Privacy Initiative of the Year, acknowledging the company’s significant efforts to educate employees through data privacy learning channels, modules, and learning sessions. These initiatives aim to strengthen privacy awareness across the organization by making privacy practices relevant and actionable for employees using practical, retail-specific scenarios.

“These programs promote the responsible handling of personal data as part of everyday work using practical, retail-specific scenarios to make privacy more relevant and actionable for employees,” Ng added.

Furthermore, SM Retail’s Data Protection Officer (DPO), Leyson San Juan, was named a finalist for Data Protection Officer of the Year for the second consecutive year. These recognitions follow SM Retail’s Privacy Management Program Award win last year.

The awarding ceremony took place during Privacy Awareness Week (PAW), an annual celebration dedicated to strengthening data privacy awareness and promoting responsible personal data processing in the Philippines. SM Retail’s continued commitment to data privacy underscores its dedication to protecting customer information and maintaining trust.

The SM Retail Data Privacy & Protection Team, including Chief Data Officer Bernadette C. Salinas, Manager Atty. Mikhail Josef P. Soriano, Data Protection Officer and AVP Leyson N. San Juan, Senior Manager Lorenz Victor D. Anyayahan, and Senior Manager Luis Angelo D. De Castro, were present to receive the award.
