Zamboanga City Water District Breaks Ground on P7.1 Million Booster Station Upgrade

The Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) has officially commenced a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing water services for thousands of residents. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, ZCWD officials, alongside village leaders, held a groundbreaking ceremony in Pasonanca village to mark the start of a P7.1 million upgrade to the Luyahan Booster Station.

Project Details and Objectives

Engineer Marli De Fiesta, the assistant general manager for the Technical Services Group at ZCWD, emphasized the critical need for this upgrade. "We need to undertake this project to increase the volume of treated water and enable us to operate the booster station 24/7," De Fiesta stated in an interview. The booster station currently serves approximately 3,000 households in Sitio Luyahan, Pasonanca, and the nearby Lunzuran village, but frequent complaints about low water pressure or complete water shortages, particularly in Lunzuran, have prompted this initiative.

Once completed, the upgraded station is expected to produce an additional 2.59 million liters of water per day (MLD), significantly boosting the daily supply. This enhancement will allow ZCWD to serve around 5,550 households, nearly doubling the current capacity and ensuring a more reliable water service.

Technical Components of the Upgrade

The comprehensive project includes several key technical improvements designed to optimize water distribution and management. These components are:

  • Laying of 746.30 linear meters of 200-millimeter (MM) Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipeline.
  • Construction of one unit of a 200-MM isolation valve.
  • Installation of one 25-MM air release assembly.
  • Construction of one 100-MM blow off assembly.
  • Installation of one lot of 200-MM electromagnetic flow meter switch and flow transmitter.
  • Upgrading of electromechanical equipment to support continuous operations.

De Fiesta explained that the project was conceptualized to provide a 24-hour water supply to concessionaires, addressing the persistent issues of inadequate water pressure and intermittent service.

Community Impact and Support

Local officials have expressed strong support for the project, highlighting its potential benefits for residents. Pasonanca Village Chairperson Nelson Lacastesantos remarked that the upgrade will be a substantial help to Sitio Luyahan residents in terms of water supply reliability. The groundbreaking event was attended by ZCWD representatives and village officials, underscoring the collaborative effort to improve public services.

Beyond the Luyahan Booster Station, ZCWD operates two additional booster stations in the villages of Talon-Talon and Cabatangan, which continue to support the city's broader water distribution network. This upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and meet the growing demands of Zamboanga City's population.
