A 19-year-old aspiring basketball player, Rene Clert Baterbonia, had reportedly posted a farewell message on social media days before his tragic death, leading some netizens to believe he had a premonition.
Farewell Post on Facebook
On May 31, Baterbonia shared a heartfelt post on Facebook that seemed like a goodbye. He wrote: "From dreams and sacrifices to unforgettable memories, my Palarong Pambansa journey has been one of the greatest chapters of my life. Every training session, every challenge, every victory, and every setback helped shape me into a stronger athlete and person."
He added: "Representing Davao Region on the national stage was an honor that I will always carry with pride. This journey was never just about medals—it was about growth, friendships, lessons, and the people I met along the way."
Baterbonia expressed gratitude to Off-Campus, Ateneo, Davao Region, his coaches, teammates, family, and supporters. He concluded: "As this chapter comes to an end, I leave with a grateful heart and memories that will last a lifetime. This is RENE CLERT BATERBONIA, Jersey #2 of the DAVRAA Eagles is signing off. Thank you for everything."
TikTok Video with Ominous Song
Reports also indicated that Baterbonia had a TikTok video showing his medal with a background song titled "Kalapastangan," which includes the lyrics "Mamamatay akong nakangiti" (I will die smiling).
Drowning Incident
Baterbonia drowned along with another Nigerian student athlete during a team-building activity of the Ateneo Men's Basketball Team in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8.
