Senator Francis 'Chiz' Escudero has reiterated his stance that the national government must consider non-tax revenue sources, including the bidding of exploration and production agreements for the country's indigenous coal resources.
Non-Tax Revenue as a Priority
The senator made this statement as economic managers continue to study ways to strengthen and secure funding for social protection programs, energy transition, and long-term fiscal stability. To date, various tax proposals remain under review as part of the government's broader fiscal strategy.
Proposed Tax Measures Under Review
Among the measures being considered are possible revisions to excise taxes on sweetened beverages and certain food products, the Motor Vehicle Road User's Tax (MVRUT), and the proposed excise tax on single-use plastics (SUPs).
Escudero's Clarification on New Taxes
Escudero clarified that the imposition of new taxes would only be implemented as a last resort, emphasizing the importance of efficient revenue collection and full utilization of existing non-tax opportunities.
