Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit to discuss expanding cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, and food security. President Marcos emphasized the importance of regular consultations between the two countries and stated that there is much more they can work on together, especially in energy and food security.

Invitation to East Asia Summit

As chairman of ASEAN, President Marcos invited President Putin to the 21st East Asia Summit, which will be held in Manila in November.

Russian Perspective

On the Russian side, President Putin highlighted the strong tradition of respect and friendship between the Philippines and Russia. He also mentioned the potential for broader cooperation in trade, agriculture, and energy.

50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

The meeting coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Russia. It was noted that last year, bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded half a billion dollars.

Putin added that there are already existing cooperation mechanisms between the Philippines and Russia, including the Joint Russia-Philippines Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, which can serve as a platform to further expand economic ties.
