Johnny Abarrientos: RJ will surpass my PBA achievements

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) legendary point guard Johnny “Flying A” Abarrientos believes that his nephew, RJ Abarrientos, will achieve even greater heights than he did in Asia's first professional league.

“He will go further,” said the also-called “Johnny A” regarding RJ, as published on Spin.ph.

Johnny A made this statement after RJ received the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) award in the ongoing Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup recently.

Johnny A, now 55 years old, is considered one of the best point guards to have played in the PBA. He won 12 championships with the Alaska team, including a rare Grand Slam title in 1996.

Apart from titles, Johnny A was named 1996 MVP, was chosen BPC twice in 1996 and 1997, and was named Finals MVP twice. He also earned other accolades and is one of the PBA's 50 Greatest Players of all time.

As for RJ, who has been playing in the PBA for only two years, he has so far won the BPC and Rookie of the Year awards. However, Johnny A firmly believes that his nephew will achieve many more awards and successes as his career progresses.

“He is willing to learn and very humble,” Johnny A added in describing RJ, who is one of the most reliable players for Brgy. Ginebra Gin Kings.
